Introduction

Contrary to the popular belief that anyone can teach, a good teacher needs a deep understanding of their learners’ needs, regardless of age. Since most astrology courses are geared toward adults, it is helpful to remember the key differences between teaching children vs. adults.

1. Learning Motivation

Children: For many children, learning is a natural part of their daily life. At best, curiosity and the joy of discovery drive their motivation to learn, regardless of the setting. Unfortunately, the learning from their formal school classes is often motivated by external factors such as the pressure to get good grades, to meet the demands of parents and get approval from teachers, or the desire to fit in with peers.

Adults: Adult learners, on the other hand, are typically self-motivated. They often pursue education to achieve specific goals such as career advancement, personal development, or acquiring new skills. Their motivation is usually intrinsic, stemming from a desire to achieve specific personal or professional objectives. As long as a course of study matches their interests and the time constraints of adult life, they remain motivated.

2. Cognitive Development

Children: Children are in the process of developing their cognitive abilities. They often learn best through play, exploration, and hands-on activities that engage their senses. Their thinking is often concrete, and abstract concepts can be challenging to grasp without concrete examples.

Adults: Adults usually have more developed cognitive abilities and can understand complex and abstract concepts. They benefit from analytical thinking, critical reasoning, and problem-solving activities. Adult learners also bring a wealth of prior knowledge and life experiences to the learning process, which can be leveraged to enhance their understanding of new material.

3. Teaching Methods

Children: Teaching children requires a more structured approach with clear instructions and consistent routines. Interactive methods, such as storytelling, games, and group activities, can be highly effective. Teachers need to be patient, encouraging, and able to manage classroom behavior effectively.

Adults: Teaching adults often involves more collaborative and flexible approaches. Adult learners appreciate being treated as equals and value opportunities for discussion, debate, and sharing experiences. Case studies, practical applications, and real-world scenarios are often effective teaching tools. Adults also prefer opportunities for self-directed learning and appreciate having a say in their learning process.

4. Emotional and Social Considerations

Children: Children are still developing their social and emotional skills. They may require more guidance and support in managing emotions and building social relationships. Positive reinforcement and a nurturing environment are crucial for their success.

Adults: Adult learners generally have more developed emotional and social skills. However, they face different challenges, such as balancing learning with work, family responsibilities, and other commitments. Providing support and flexibility can help adult learners succeed.

5. Learning Environment

Children: Children often learn best in what they perceive as a safe environment. They need stimulating learning opportunities with time for exploration and play. Various visual aids, interactive activities, and physical movement are essential to keep them engaged.

Adults: Adults tend to prefer learning environments that are respectful, inclusive, and conducive to focused study. They appreciate practical, real-world applications of knowledge and value efficient use of time.

For most astrology educators, it is rare to have classes for children. Understanding the differences in approach between child and adult education can help create a more effective and engaging learning environment.
